You can have great romance – real romance – for the rest of your life. And, it’s easier than you think!

All you have to do is begin practicing the first of these ten steps. When you feel comfortable, add the next one that attracts you most. Before long you’ll notice a difference in your confidence, self-respect, your capacity to give and receive love and, of course, the intimacy that makes it all worthwhile. See what magic you create!

Step 1: ACCEPT COMPLIMENTS. Do you have trouble accepting compliments? Most people do. The first step toward The New Intimacy is to pay attention to every compliment you receive — from anyone. A compliment is love-in-shorthand. Practice accepting compliments with a simple, “Thank you.” Your heart will open; you will begin to feel generous and eager to give the gift of taking what someone wants to give to you. Then, watch the world become a place you only imagined was possible.

Step 2: NOTICE DIFFERENCES. Differences hold the key to a richer and more meaningful life. Our differences are the celebration of all that is possible, including you. As you practice the basic truth that — the other person is not you — so that you have to discover who he or she is, you will move beyond isolation, loneliness and the yearning for connection. The simple act of paying attention to how different other people are from you will change your life forever.

Step 3: EXPRESS YOURSELF. No one just like you has ever lived before or will ever live again. That’s much more than a superficial observation. It is as profound a truth as there is in this life. When you appreciate just how unique you are, you will understand the importance of never shortchanging the truth of what you feel, what you believe and what you desire. You will never pass this way again just as you are. Express yourself. Give your partner, and yourself, the chance to find out what it is that makes you-you.

Step 4: RESERVE JUDGMENT. It’s so easy for us to get caught up insisting on what we think is right, or sensible, or appropriate. Those are judgments. When you make them in a knee-jerk fashion, without thinking, without taking the time to find out if they really apply, you not only wipe out the person you hurl them at, you sentence yourself to the solitary confinement of being the way you’ve always been. If you yearn for more from your life, one of the simplest ways you can have more is to reserve judgment and let others and the world become your teacher. When you take the time to reserve judgment, you will liberate yourself from the solitary confinement of being the way you’ve always been.

Step 5: LISTEN ACTIVELY. Talking is easy for most people. Listening is another story. To listen actively you have to tune in to your partner’s experience from his or her own point of view. That’s the only way you’ll know what’s really going on. Otherwise all that happens is you stay stuck in your own world, waiting for your turn. So, open to a possibility that’s different from your own. You know how boring mutual monologues can be!

Step 6: TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. In any relationship, two people are always teaching each other exactly how they expect to be treated right from the first moment. So, you have impact. Every relationship is co-created, that’s the beauty of being with someone. Why waste your time pretending to be powerless. That’s only a game you play with yourself. When you take care with who you are, you give your partner the opportunity to care for you.

Step 7: DISAGREE. Can you say “No” when you have to? Or do you keep your frustrations hidden until you explode? If so, you’re being disrespectful of you and your partner. Differences are bound to rise in any relationship. They are a chance to define who you are distinct from your partner. Make a point of voicing your disagreement. Stop yourself from being invisible.

Step 8: LOVE EVERYDAY. Don’t let any day go by without expressing your love in some way. It doesn’t take much. Just give small kindnesses! Little gifts, surprise notes, special snuggling, calls to the office, you name it. These small moments of affection will keep your love alive and open your conscious creativity to ever more delights. After all, what’s the point of being with someone and not enjoying it!?

Step 9: ASK, ASK, ASK. It’s not true that if you have to ask for what you want it won’t mean as much. That’s an adolescent belief. In a real relationship, your partner can’t hear what you’re not saying. Trust enough to make yourself available to the relationship and to getting what you want. When you hold back and then are disappointed, you only create resentment.

Step 10: INCLUDE CONFLICT. When two people live together over time, conflicts are inevitable. If you deny that fact, you will suffocate the life out of your relationship. The point is, how can you make them productive? Conflict is just like the sand in an oyster — annoying, irritating, but you have to have it to get the pearl!

Step 11: BE CURIOUS. Genuine curiosity is the finest aphrodisiac there is. When your partner wants to know who you really are, the good and the not-so-good, the whole package, what finer compliment can you ask for? And when you let your partner in to your thoughts and feelings, what finer gift can you give in turn?

Step 12: RECEIVE LOVE. Love may not always show up just as you expect. In fact, it’s unavoidable that your partner will express love is ways you hadn’t anticipated. He is not you. She is not you. If you only want love to come the way you want it, you’ll only get what you’ve always had. Real love is a wonder that will come from beyond your imagination. Open and receive it!

Drinking coffee is almost the national pastime, and delicious breads and cookies are always served alongside the coffee.

In Scandinavia, “Coffee tables” are a popular means of celebration, loaded with hearty breads, delicate sweets like Desert Sand Cookies, and whipped cream cakes such as Strawberries and Cream Cake. After the long winters, Spring is celebrated with simple fruit tarts.

This book, which features a mouth-watering photograph by Joel Butkowski for every recipe, is a must-have” for anyone of Scandinavian heritage, whether you cook or not. And it’s equally desirable for anyone who’s ever had the opportunity to enjoy dining on Scandinavian baked goods, like lefse, krumkake, Swedish limpa rye bread or Danish aebleskiver.

While this is clearly a cook book, it is also a “coffee table” book, (pun intended) in that it not only showcases one recipe per page spread, with the left hand page featuring the mouth-watering product photo while the right hand page provides the recipe - but the right column of each right hand page offers almost a travelogue style peek into current day Scandinavian life, with a photo and caption worthy of a tourist brochure.

Offering more than forty recipes, Scandinavian Classic Baking provides recipes for a wide range of treats, from simple cookies and muffins to elaborate princess cakes. Carefully written directions and attention to detail guarantee success for both novice and experienced bakers.

The chapters are broken down into coffee breads, cakes, cookies, tarts fruit desserts & pastries, and traditional favorites. Don’t miss the Danish Almond Tea Ring which is featured on the book’s cover, or the Swedish Kringle!

These are recipes to be shared and cherished for generations.

In the United States, they are a spring and summer tradition. They’re usually homespun events held on the weekends, with the homeowners merchandise laid out on tables in a yard, under a tent, or literally in a garage…

Sometimes whole neighborhoods will get into the act, banding together to hold a much larger sale with the hopes of attracting more buyers – and ending up with more profits for all involved.

Personally, I’ve attended only a handful of these sales, and held two of my own, both of which were only marginally successful. So before reading this book, I ‘d never really considered thrifting as anything more than light summer entertainment.

This even though I used to have a neighbor who held monthly garage sales. Observing her, I realized that she couldn’t possibly be limiting herself to merely selling her personal cast-offs – she’d actually turned garage sale-ing into a backyard business. But I still didn’t see the big picture…

In Tossed & Found, Barb Tobias takes you on an amazing journey, sharing tales of treasure; revealing how to clear the clutter from your home and resell it; and uncovering the secrets to decorating and dressing on the cheap – with fantastic results.

Whether you’re a transitioning Baby Boomer or a college student trying to figure out how to furnish your first apartment, you’ll find help in this book which is chock full of photos, lists and tips.

You’ll learn the differences between garage sales, estate sales, tag sales and demolition sales

Not to mention discovering how to master buying and selling via flea markets, auctions, consignment stores, swap meets, thrift store chains, and eBay

You’ll find out how to use Craig’s list and other online services to promote your sale

And how to earn big bucks holding the best garage sale ever. (Hint: Barb calls her garage sales “Diva Sales,” and she treats all her customers accordingly.)

By NABBW members Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D. & Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D.

Are you and your partner worried about money in these uncertain times? During any economic crisis, couples have to face tough financial decisions. This can lead to an increase in stress and aggravate problems that already exist in your marriage.

As you look back to when you first met, what attracted you to your partner – fierce independence, strong character, a decisive nature? Now, these very same qualities may be getting in the way of getting along.

If you want to come to terms with your negative feelings, notice what has changed in your marriage. And try to see your own part in what’s going on. If there’s a glimmer of hope and you want to stay together, accept the challenge of turning it around.

Some of these ideas can help you get started:

1. Identify your emotions.

As a first step, write down the feelings that now regularly surface. And record what’s happening between you and your partner when you are sad, scared, overwhelmed, embarrassed or frustrated. Chances are you have emotions ranging from disappointment to anger, and these may be constantly changing. Don’t worry – this is normal. Understanding what you feel, and why, can be the first step toward improving your situation.

2. Stop focusing on the past.

Identify the hot button issues that are standing in your way and make efforts to resolve them. If you initiate changes, that can be an encouraging sign to your partner. And the sooner you let go of the past, the quicker you can move forward to improve the goodwill in your relationship. It may not be easy to forgive, but it is a gift you can give to your partner and yourself.

3. Limit your arguments.

If the situation between the two of you is tense, small annoyances can seem worse than before. When you argue, allowing bad feelings to fester only makes it harder. Don’t turn your quarrel into something more or attach your reactions to another issue. Agree that you will together explore the problems. And spend time learning about conflict resolution, direct communication and active listening skills. There’s information available through relationship workshops, the Internet and the self help section in bookstores.

4. Begin a process of serious talking.

Can’t do it alone? If you really want to work out your differences, consider consulting with a marital therapist or joining a couples’ support group. When you understand more about the other’s needs and capabilities, you’ll be clearer about compromises you have to make. Then it will be up to both of you to decide whether you’re willing to do the hard work. That may include efforts to change your current expectations, redefine what marriage means to you and create new goals for the relationship.

5. Support each other.

Instead of focusing on the negatives or going your separate ways, spend time discussing what you want from one other. Think about what would demonstrate true emotional commitment to you. Prove that you are on each other’s side by deciding to change your attitude and behavior. Invest in your marriage’s emotional bank account. Create excitement, pleasure and fun together – then take advantage of the dividends.

You and your partner are individuals who each have a mind of your own. What you want may have changed since you first tied the knot. And the present economic meltdown probably adds to the pressures in your relationship. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make shifts that will relieve some of the stress. And you don’t have to accept the possibility of divorce. By taking the first steps, you can help strengthen your partner’s trust in you – and the future of your marriage.

With the economy recovering so slowly, this might be the year to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home.

Take time for a quiet meal for two and spend an evening enjoying a special dinner and a bottle of wine. Set the scene, maybe in front of a blazing fire, and use your best china and crystal.

Easily prepared ahead, shrimp scampi is perfect for a meal for two.

Watch for specials on shrimp, especially on wild American shrimp. They are safe to eat and you’ll be helping the Gulf region recover. You’ll only need about 1/2 pound.

For this classic Italian dish, I’ve used a shallot but for a garlicky kick, add one or two minced garlic cloves. Panko are dried Japanese breadcrumbs that are light and delicate and make a tasty topping but you can omit them and have a buttery sauce instead.

To complete this elegant meal, I prepare rice that can soak up the sauce. Quick and easy, boil-in-the-bag rice makes two generous servings and now is also available with brown rice. Add a green salad lightly tossed with lemon vinaigrette or a green vegetable and light the candles.

Put the bread pudding in the oven when you sit down for dinner and it will be ready in time for dessert.

Baked Shrimp Scampi

To butterfly shrimp, cut down the center where the vein has been removed lengthwise without cutting through. This will enable the shrimp to stand in the dish and cook through better. Look for the number of shrimp per pound as an indication of size. Extra large shrimp (16-20 per pound) may be a more economical choice and will probably cook a little faster.

Makes 2 servings

6-8 jumbo shrimp (12-15 per pound), peeled, deveined and butterflied

2 tablespoons white wine

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/8 teaspoon coarse salt

2 tablespoons butter, softened

1 shallot, minced

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

Lemon wedges

Combine the shrimp, wine, olive oil and salt in a food storage bag. Massage the shrimp to distribute the marinade. Chill until needed.

Mix the butter, shallot, parsley, rosemary and lemon juice until blended. Stir in the panko crumbs.

Heat the oven to 425 degrees F. Arrange the shrimp cut side down with tails standing up in a 1-quart baking dish. Pour the marinade over the shrimp. Crumble the topping over the shrimp. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until shrimp are bright pink and crumbs are lightly browned. Serve with lemon wedges.

New Orleans Bread Pudding

Follow dinner with bread pudding drenched in Irish cream liqueur. I like using a chewy bread such as ciabatta or French, or try English muffins for a change. Leftover cinnamon bread or croissants are also good choices. Be sure to reduce the oven temperature after baking the scampi!

Makes 2 servings

1 1/2 cups 1-inch pieces day-old bread chewy bread

3 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2/3 cup whole milk

1 large egg

Lightly grease two (6 oz.) ramekins or custard cups with nonstick cooking spray. Divide the bread into the cups. Beat the sugar, vanilla and egg in a small bowl until smooth. Beat in the milk.

Pour half of the milk mixture into each cup. Allow to stand at room temperature about 30 minutes or until the milk is absorbed.

Heat the oven 350 degrees F. Bake 28 to 33 minutes or until lightly browned, puffed and set in the center. Test for doneness by inserting a knife in the center. It should come out clean, but it will be wet. Cool slightly before serving.

For a special occasion, spoon a little Irish cream liqueur into the center before serving.
